Swim To Start

Supporting key water skills and the local community

Members of the Nauset Regional High School Swimming and Diving Team and their coach have developed a pilot program for Nauset Students and other local young people, which we plan to launch in August of 2026. Participants will develop key skills in the water, which we hope to see used as foundational skills in people’s lives and pursued on our team in the future. Members of the Nauset Swim team will teach the program and will be cost-free for those looking to take part.

Goals

  1. Nauset Swimming looks to provide a space for students who may not have a great background in swimming to develop key skills in the water.

  2. Provide a space for NRHS students and rising NRMS 8th graders to explore the field of swimming before the school season begins.

  3. Provide a free program for Nauset Students to be able to engage in swimming in the program.

Water Safety Rationale

  1. Nearly 900 children and adolescents ages 0 - 19 die from accidental drowning each year.

  2. Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury deaths for children and adolescents ages 5-19

  3. One of the key solutions proposed by the American Academy of Pediatrics is “Children and adolescents should learn basic swim skills including floating and moving through the water.”

  4. Living on Cape Cod, water is everywhere.  Every child and adolescent must know how to swim.

Qualifications:

  1. The Nauset Swim Coach will oversee and monitor the work done.

  2. Rising Nauset High School senior Edith Spiegel is a part time assistant coach for a club team. She also has been teaching learn to swim programs for 3 years in various capacities. She will take on the role of head instructor.

  3. Other students, from several schools, with certifications such as CPR, Lifeguard, and First Aid, will be there to advise and act as assistant instructors.
